#1 keeps rolling
After tremendous pitching carried Florida in its sweep of LSU (@ LoSerU)over the weekend, the Gators let their bats do most of the work Tuesday against Winthrop.
The top-ranked Gators (19-2, 3-0 SEC) cranked out a season-high 24 hits in a 22-5 pounding of the Eagles (9-10, 2-1 Big South).
After scattering six runs over the first five innings, the Gators did the brunt of their damage in the bottom of the fifth and sixth as they registered 10 hits and plated nine over the two innings.
All nine of Florida’s starters recorded a hit before the seventh inning Tuesday.
Sophomore shortstop Nolan Fontana and catcher Mike Zunino both had grand slams, knocking in a combined 10 runs on the night. Fontana went 3-for-5 at the plate with a career-high six RBIs.
Left-hander Steven Rodriguez (1-0, 3.18 ERA) earned the win, going 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and allowing two earned runs, while Winthrop’s Wade Newman (1-1, 8.44) took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up six runs (four earned) and eight hits.
