Boise State – Nevada!

Should make for a good game, but should it be the defining moment in getting BSU into the BCS Title game?….Of course not. Boise gets to choose its OOC schedule, and this year they took on VTech (big game, but the close result was negated by James Madison one week later) and Oregon State. Oregon State just beat Coach “Big-Boy Pants” but haven’t had a good year by any means. At 5-5 they’ve not proven a 13 point loss to BSU was anything more of merit than Notre Dame taking out Army last week. Boise State’s “other” two OOC games were Toledo and Wyoming! Coincidentally, Toledo and Wyoming played each other this year, in Toledo…and Wyoming won 20-15 in Toledo’s “Glass Bowl”. Apparently, like the jaw of a fighter, “Glass” means “vulnerable” in Toledo (too)!…???

(my jiggle-keys distraction)

So, BSU had their pick…they selected VTech and Oregon State. Few can argue the VTech provided, as far as potential, for a good game win. At the time, it looked like it was ALL they’d need to prove their worth! Then came along James Madison….who played those SAME Hokies, only they played them AND beat them (by more) IN Blacksburg!

This was NOT the defining moment for VTech football in 2010 though, but it did show they were NOT ready to play at the start of the year! VTech has rolled up good wins since, and last week clinched their division in the ACC with a win over the Jacory Harris-less Miami Hurricanes. Oregon State is still fighting to become Bowl eligible,….though they should make it. Point of reference, Tennessee will go Bowling this year too!

Toledo and Wyoming, though, paired with a pathetic in conference schedule does not spell “Impressive” to anyone except those looking to make Boise their sweet-heart pick. It should also be noted that Boise was offered, AND REFUSED, a series with Oklahoma and Nebraska, in the recent past.

So, why are there forces pimping Boise over other more deserving teams?….Well, for one, it plays down to the “everything in America is a conspiracy” focus we have going on here. -Enter the uber hypocrite Senetor Orrin Hatch from Utah, spewing on and on about “fairness”!!  Secondly, there’s the “underdog” theme many love.

Another reason we have forces pimping BSU and TCU is that ESPN bought the rights to the BCS Title game!…and, since nearly anything can happen (apologies to you conspiracy apologists!), ESPN has to promote a potential game between two smaller markets, in the event that’s what they are stuck with! So, they hype everything up, and have their “paid” employees angle you in on the “why’s” and the “why not’s” of it all.

To be “fair” to the schools in the discussion, they are damn good, too. I’m not saying Boise State AND TCU aren’t also really good teams!….I subscribe to the adage that they “could” beat anyone on some given day theory too. BUT!…the “any-others” have to get to that date by playing and beating MUCH better teams, much tUFfer teams and do it in venues that are more difficult to play in. They have to do it MORE often than BSU or TCU do, as well. No one is going to argue, that had TCU or BSU played the schedule of ANYONE in the SEC, BIG12, ACC, PAC10 or even the BIG10\11\12, that they’d still be undefeated right now.- And they wouldn’t. This year they’d probably have made it through the BIGLeast though.

Finally, let’s all stop assuming that the playoff format that’s installed in many sports, was done so to promote “fairness”. It was only formulated and implemented to increase revenue. Part of what they used to promote that idea of having the fans spend more money, was that it was all for the glory of proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that the team that comes out of it all, is, unquestionably, THE #1 team in the land…..Most times that’s no more definitive than the College method is…It, just like a chiropractor, takes more visits!

Still, BOISE/NEVADA will be a very entertaining game, and you shouldn’t miss it!
