‘Clones drop a home game

Posted by UFreak On February - 28 - 2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio – A three goal explosion in the third period by the Elmira Jackals was enough to give the club a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night. Defensemen Brandon Roach and Nathan Lutz each had a goal and an assist to pace the victory. Michael Teslak stopped 20 shots to take the victory.

Elmira scored the only goal of the first period when defenseman Nathan Lutz fired a shot from just inside the blueline for his sixth goal of the year. Brandon Roach and Pierre-Luc Faubert had the assists. The shots on goal also favored the Jackals, 11-4.

The second period did not have any scoring, but Elmira had three power play chances to Cincinnati’s one. The shots on goal again went the way of the Jackals, 11-5.

The Cyclones tied the game at 1-1 at the 2:33 mark of the third period, as Justin Johnson netted his eleventh of the campaign. Johnson scored in a goal mouth scramble to level the scores as Ben McLeod and Breet Beauchamp handed out the assists. The Jackals scored the final three goals of the game to pull away with the decision. Roach (his ninth at 6:06), Chris Korchinski (his 19th at 8:27) and Mike Sgroi (his ninth at 13:58 on the power play) rounded out the scoring. Cincinnati won the shots battle in the third period, 12-11. For the game, Elmira outshot Cincinnati, 33-21. The Jackals were two-for-five on the power play while the Cyclones were one-for-four with the extra attacker.

The Cyclones are now 31-21-5 on the season, while Elmira is 30-21-5. The Cyclones play host to Elmira Saturday night in the final regular season meeting between the teams. These are also the final weekend games for the Cyclones until Fan Appreciation Weekend (April 3-4). Tickets are just ten dollars each. Saturday’s game features one dollar pulled pork sandwiches and is Go Green Night.

With the crowd of 4078, the Cyclones are averaging 21.9 percent more fans than 2007-08 through 29 home games. That is the second-largest improvement from last year through 29 games of any professional hockey team in North America (Tulsa-CHL is up 27.0%). Last year, Cincinnati’s season attendance improved 36.8 percent over 2006-07—the biggest increase in all of professional hockey. The Cyclones are averaging 2866 per game, having welcomed 83,111 fans this season.

UCats win first of the year

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fought off a late rally from the Davidson College Wildcats and earned its first win of the season with an 11-10 extra-inning win Friday evening at Wilson Field on the Davidson campus. Senior Mike Spina (Newberry, Fla./Newberry) and freshman Dorian West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) drove in four runs apiece leading UC to its first win of the 2009 campaign.

Cincinnati (1-3) got on the board quickly with five runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, senior Cameron Satterwhite (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) doubled the right field line, before Spina reached base courtesy of a walk. A Wildcat error allowed junior Lance Durham (Forest Park, Ohio/Roger Bacon) to reach base, loading the bases for sophomore Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic).

Riddell smacked a double into centerfield bringing home Satterwhite and Spina, giving UC a 2-0 lead. In the first start of his career, West belted a three-run home run to extend the Bearcat lead to five, 5-0. The home run was West’s first career round tripper.

Davidson (4-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the third to tie the game at five, but the Bearcats responded with four runs in the fourth to take a 9-5 advantage. With one out, junior Jimmy Jacquot (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) singled to kick things off and moved to third base two batters later on a single by junior Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). After Satterwhite walked to load the bases, Spina cleared the bases with a grand slam down the left field line to put the Bearcats in front, 9-5.

The Bearcats entered the eighth inning with its four-run lead still intact, 10-6, but a four-run Davidson rally in the eighth inning knotted the game at 10.

The game headed into extra innings after both teams went scoreless in the ninth inning, marking the first extra inning game for the Bearcats this season.

In the top of the tenth inning, a Satterwhite double, a Spina walk, and a Durham walk loaded the bases for the Bearcats with nobody out. Junior Beach Brooks (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) catapulted UC in front with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right field allowing Satterwhite to cross the dish. However, a strike out and a fly out ended the threat.

Sophomore Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), who came in to the get the final out in the eighth inning, retired the side in the Davidson half of the tenth inning to give Cincinnati an 11-10 triumph.

Spina and West both knocked in four runs apiece, while Satterwhite went 2-for-5 and scored four runs. Jensen pitched 2.1 innings of relief without giving up a hit to earn the win.

***The remaining 3 games UC has scheduled in Davidson have been cancelled, due to poor weather. UC now heads to Oxford Ohio for a March 4th game against Miami, OH.

‘Canes drop UFlorida in opener 8-5

No. 10 UM Takes Opener Over No. 12 Baseball, 8-5

Gainesville, Fla. - Friday February 27, 2009

In front of 4,714 fans at McKethan Stadium, No. 10 Miami (4-1) used a pair of home runs and a career-high five RBI by senior Jonathan Weislow to hand No. 12 Florida (5-1) an 8-5 defeat on Friday night in the opener of a weekend series. Weislow (2-for-4) cranked a game-tying two-run dinger in the fourth off Gator senior Patrick Keating (Harrisburg, Ill.) (1-1) and moved the Hurricanes ahead with a three-run blast in the sixth. Tonight’s game marked the first two round-trippers of his career.

UM sophomore Chris Hernandez (2-0) collected the win to improve to 13-0 in his collegiate career. The All-American lefty gave up six hits and four runs over five innings and registered five strikeouts. The loss ended a 12-game winning streak at home for Florida dating back to a 7-4 setback to No. 5 Georgia on April 25 of last year.

“I thought we did a nice job offensively and we worked a few counts,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “We got (Chris) Hernandez’s pitch count to around 100 pitches through five innings. We did what we needed to do, we got a lead. The problem is that every time we scored runs, we gave them up the following inning. We didn’t play good defense and we didn’t score enough runs. “

The Hurricanes loaded the bases in the second inning but came away empty-handed. Junior Chris Herrmann and freshman Harold Martinez opened the frame with back-to-back singles and were sacrificed into scoring position by junior Ryan Jackson (2-for-4). Keating caught senior Dave DiNatale (2-for-5) looking on strikes before yielding a walk to junior Jason Hagerty to fill the sacks. The right-hander worked out of the jam by having Weislow ground out to sophomore third baseman Josh Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Florida erupted for three runs in the bottom of the frame against Hernandez, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by junior Matt den Dekker (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and consecutive two-out hits from Adams and senior Brandon McArthur (Seffner, Fla.) (2-for-4). Sophomore Riley Cooper (Clearwater, Fla.) raised his hitting streak to nine games with a leadoff single and junior Mike Mooney (Loxahatchee, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice to give the Gators two runners aboard. Senior Avery Barnes (High Springs, Fla.) executed UF’s first sacrifice bunt of the season to advance his teammates and den Dekker followed with sac fly into left to score Cooper. Adams bashed a ground-rule double to straightaway center field to drive in Mooney and McArthur poked a base-knock into left center to bring in Adams for a 3-0 lead.

Miami answered with three unearned runs in the top of the fourth, including a game-tying two-run homer by Weislow. Adams misplayed Martinez’s ground ball to begin the inning and the runner stole second. A one-out single up the middle by DiNatale left runners on the corners and Hagerty’s grounder to second base plated Martinez. With two down, Weislow belted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to square the contest.

UF regained the lead in the home part of the fifth on a two-out infield single by McArthur. Mooney opened with a single, went to second on a grounder and advanced to third on a wild pitch with two down. McArthur legged out a hit to second base to put the Gators ahead and a throwing error on the play by junior Scott Lawson left two runners in scoring position. Hernandez had junior Clayton Pisani (Naples, Fla.) ground out to hold the margin at 4-3.

Weislow connected on his second homer of the night in the sixth to give the Hurricanes a 6-4 advantage. Jackson led off with a single and Hagerty’s hit through the right side of the infield set the table for Weislow, who cranked a three-run shot to left field. Keating departed after surrendering the homer, having allowed eight hits and six runs (three earned), with four strikeouts and a walk.

Junior Tony Davis (Cooper City, Fla.) relieved Keating and worked 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts. DiNatale greeted freshman reliever Will Jolin (Guilford, Conn.) in the eighth with an infield hit, took second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third by Hagerty. Jolin uncorked another wild pitch to score DiNatale and give the visitors a 7-4 edge. After yielding walks to Weislow and Melendres, a flare into left by Lawson loaded the bases with one down and ended the night for Jolin (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB). Freshman Greg Larson (Longwood, Fla.) prevented further damage by having sophomore Yasmani Grandal ground into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.

McArthur was plunked by freshman Daniel Miranda (2.2 IP, 1 H) with one out in the bottom of the eighth and scored on freshman Daniel Pigott’s (Ormond Beach, Fla.) two-out, pinch-hit single to narrow the gap to 7-5. UM junior All-American closer Kyle Bellamy was called in from the bullpen and permitted a single into right field by freshman pinch hitter Tyler Thompson (Tequesta, Fla.), the rookie’s first collegiate hit. Cooper earned a free pass on four pitches to fill the sacks with two down and Mooney smacked a hard shot to third base bidding for an infield hit. However, Herrmann’s relay over to first was ruled in time for the final out of the inning to keep Miami ahead by two runs.

Jackson provided Miami with an insurance run in the ninth with an RBI double to left field off Larson (1.2 IP, 1 H) that scored Herrmann. Bellamy struck out the final two batters to nail down his second save of the year.

The Hurricanes held and 11-8 advantage in hits and were aided by three UF errors. The trio of DiNatale, Jackson and Winslow chipped in with two hits apiece, while McArthur was the lone Gator with multiple hits. Game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. will pit Florida freshman lefty Alex Panteliodis (Tampa, Fla.) (1-0, 3.00) against UM junior right-hander David Gutierrez (0-0, 1.80). In his collegiate debut last weekend, Panteliodis went six innings and earned the win against No. 8 Louisville by scattering five hits and permitting two runs.

Browns dump Soldier Boy in Tampa Bay

Browns trade tight end Winslow…

The Cleveland Browns traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday for undisclosed draft picks.

 kellen-winslow

“The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years,” Browns general manager George Kokinis said in a statement. “We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team.”

The Browns selected Winslow with the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. In his five years in Cleveland, he played in 44 games, recording 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2006, he caught 89 passes for 875 yards and 3 touchdowns, and in 2007 he went to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns. He played in 10 games in 2008, catching 43 passes for 428 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Tampa Bay MUST be desperate, after releasing D-Brooks, Warrick Dunn and Joey Galloway….those were moves you HAVE to make, as a team, but then to bring in this ass-clown?

Tiger Loses in Second Round….I am not surprised.

Posted by thegolfer On February - 27 - 2009

Tiger Woods pulled a Huggins, he lost in the second round, but did you really expect him to win this thing?  Tiger came in on Wednesday and played ok.  He won the holes that he needed to in his match to win it.  He struck the ball well, and his opponent Brenden Jones said that he wouldn’t bet against Tiger.  Jones also said that Woods hits shots that nobody else on tour can hit.  In the first round match, Woods hit a 3 iron from 237 yards to 5 feet.  I saw the video on that shot, and how he makes a 3 iron land that soft is beyond me.  It was beyond Jones as well.  Woods finished the match in 16 holes, and played adequate golf.  He finished with 2 Eagles, 3 Birdies, 8 Pars, and 3 bogeys, no where near a perfect round, but he got it done when he needed to.

Tigers second round match, well that was not so easy.  He faced 32 ranked Tim Clark of South Africa.  Clark isn’t a superstar by any stretch of the imagination, but he did win the 2008 Austrailian Open, which makes him a threat.  Clark put a pounding on Tiger, easily winning the match 4 and 2.

The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship is up for grabs.  All four number 1 seeds have been eliminated.  Look for “Tits” Mickelson as the favorite for the rest of the weekend.

Welcome Home Huggy-Bear!

huggsThis is why everyone loved Huggy-Bear, because he keeps it real!  He’s a brilliant basketball coach and he wears his heart on his sleeve.  Sure he made a few mistakes, took a few chances on some kids that didn’t pan out, and he had a few drinks and got behind the wheel of a car.  But hell, who hasn’t done that at some point.

I personally hated to see Huggs go, but not so much because he was leaving, it was because of the way he had to go.  I understand coaches, players, and staff come and go.  That’s just how it is.  But Z-Bitch was just looking for a reason to get rid of him, and unfortunately, Bobby gave it to her.

Oh well, that was a long time ago and it was great to have Huggins back in the nati.  The tribute to Huggs was great, a lot of former players flew in or drove in for the special occassion and it was certainly deserved and in my opionion, way over due!

You may not like the game, but you have to love and respect the Coach!  Good luck Huggs and remember, no matter where your travels take you, the fans in Cincinnati will always love you!

PS - We’ll always root for you, as long as your not playing against the Bearcats!

PSS - Congrats to Cronin and the Bearcats for beating WVU last night and inching closer to that NCAA bid!

Excited about the Reds?

The bitter taste of another losing Bengals season is slowly starting to fade, low expectations for the upcoming draft are in full-swing, but we actually have something else to think about and be excited about now.

Reds Baseball.

The Reds beat the Devil Rays yesterday 7-0.  I know it’s only pre-season, and this win does absolutely nothing for me.  I’m excited because this is a new year, with a lot of young talent, with speed, and probably most importantly - WITHOUT the big Ego’s.

I’ve said it several times here, I’ve always been a Griffey fan and his ego was warrented.  But he is older, injury prone, and he is finally back to end it in Seattle, where it all began for him.  That’s good news for the Reds.  Because it means they don’t have that 1 big super star.  They have a Team full of young guys trying to make a name for themselves, they have a chip on their shoulder with something to prove.  I realize alot of the experts don’t think they can even play .500 ball this year.  But I think they are wrong.  You just can’t sleep on cocky young guys with something to prove.  While I don’t think they are World Series bound (yet), I think we will have a lot of exciting baseball this year.

No more watching the white Shaq lumbering around out in left field like he’s pissed off he has to go chase a ball.  No more watching Griff pull a hammy while hustling and diving after a short fly ball that he would’ve easily caught standing up just 5 yrs. ago.  The pitching staff looks hungry and poised to prove a lot of people wrong.  Brandon Phillips is the clearly defined club-house leader that will not allow the piss poor attitudes and careless work ethic that has plagued this team for so long.

This isn’t the year that they stand on the mountain top, but don’t be surprised either.

Pushing up daisies with a boner?

A SEX-MAD Russian died after guzzling a bottle of Viagra pills to keep him going for a 12-hour orgy with two women pals.

The women had bet mechanic Sergey Tuganov £3,000 (Roughly $4,300 US) that he wouldn’t be able to satisfy them both non-stop for the half-day sex marathon.
But minutes after winning the wager, the randy 28-year-old dropped dead with a heart attack, revealed Moscow police.
One of the women, named only as Alina, said: “We called emergency services but it was too late, there was nothing they could do.”

Is this a case of Russian Roulette? or just Roulette?  Either way, Sergey went out with a bang!
Apparently Sergey thought he was “The Chosen One”.  Why else would he down a bottle of Pfizers Pfinest? Someone should’ve told him that only UFreak can pop Viagra like Mentos and live to talk about it.

Let this be a lesson to MLB, performance enhancing drugs may get you to the big contract, but you might not get to cash the check.
